The Subverted Object

October 26, 1996 - January 4, 1997

The Subverted Object explored ordinary objects subjected to “abrupt reversals” or “transformations” in the course of making art. Dada and Surrealist artists, whom recognized that the effectiveness of these transformations depended to a great extent on being able to recognize the authenticity of the original, exploited such “abrupt reversals” with unrelenting wit and cunning. This exhibition at Ubu Gallery conveyed a disorienting spirit in presenting permutations of everyday reality as “twentieth century still life.”
